DT074: Honours Degree in Computer and Communications Engineering (part-time)

This programme is accredited by Engineers Ireland (previously the Institution of Engineers of Ireland) as satisfying the educational standards required for registration of Chartered Engineers.

The programme is specifically designed for technicians who wish to enhance their existing Diploma or Ordinary Degree level qualification to an Honours Degree in just three years part-time. Students undertake the same courses as the third and fourth year students on the equivalent full-time programme (DT081).

This programme combines elements of electronic, software, hardware and communication engineering to focus on the rapid convergence occurring between all these technologies. The programme includes a significant amount of practical and laboratory work, together with lectures and tutorials. A strong emphasis is placed on developing the student's practical design/development skills and in-depth knowledge required by hi-tech companies in the computer and communications industries.

Entry Requirements

Prospective students should hold a National Diploma or Ordinary Degree (or a qualification that the Institute may deem equivalent) with distinction in electronics or a related discipline. Candidates who have passed at merit level will be considered on an individual basis.

To complete enrolment candidates are required to attend at DIT Kevin Street in person and provide proof of examinations results during the registration period. Registration will take place in early September.

Fees

The fee for new applicants 2009/2010 is €510 per module. Project is €1020. (excluding capitation €135.00)
Fees are subject to change at the discretion of the Institute.

Duration

Three years part-time. Lectures and laboratories run from late September to May of each year. Some of the lecture courses will be available in a distance-learning format. Students are required to attend college three evenings per week from 6.00 to 9.30 p.m.

Content

First Year

Mathematics, Software Engineering, Field Theory and DSP, Digital Communications, Data Communications, Operating Systems, Project Management, Business and Management.

Second and Third Year

Mathematics, Advanced Signal Processing, Computer Architecture, Real-time and Embedded Systems, Wireless Communications, Distributed Systems, Data Communications, Management, Marketing and Law, Option Module, Project.

Award

Bachelor of Engineering (Computer and Communications Engineering) of the Dublin Institute of Technology.

Progression

Students who reach an appropriate honours standard may progress to a range of Masters degrees or Doctorate programmes in DIT or elsewhere in higher education.

Career Opportunities

Computer engineers work in the vital research, development and design departments of computer and software companies. They are ideally placed to lead the development of many of the innovations needed for the evolution of the internet and mobile communications industries. Computer engineers are also key personnel in the efficient operation of health, entertainment, retail, financial, and aviation organisations.

Graduates of this programme will be well placed to pursue a highly satisfying, well-paid career taking up employment in areas such as computer engineering, software engineering, network engineering, embedded computer systems and mobile communications engineering.
